Attic Capping with EPA-registered TAP® Pest Control Insulation is a great way to add additional sales and provide customers with added pest control protection that can save them up to 30% on their annual energy bills.
That seems like a high number but not when you learn that the DOE and building codes requirements are not the same. Often, local building codes are set lower than what the DOE recommends for insulation values. That means it’s not just older homes that may be lacking the right amount of insulation, but new homes as well. A link to what the DOE recommends as attic insulation is located here.
Opportunities Abound
As a pest management professional, you have the opportunity to identify issues that your homeowner may not know they have. With each inspection of your customer’s home, we recommend including an inspection of the attic. If you don’t normally check the attic, it could be difficult to transition to why you want to inspect the attic. This is great attic capping insight.
Many insects can harbor in the attic without the homeowner’s knowledge. Asking questions like “How often do you go into your attic?” or “Have you ever had any work done in your attic?” are good transition questions to request access to the attic for an inspection. Going one step further, before you go into the attic, it is helpful to hand the homeowner the TAP® Sales Presentation Folder, so they can become familiar with the pest control benefits and energy savings that TAP® provides.
NOTE: A copy of the U.S. DOE’s Insulation R-value map mentioned is included for your convenience in the TAP® Sales Presentation Folder.
Following the Attic Inspection
Once you inspect the attic, and find no signs of insects/rodents, you may notice that the insulation levels are below those recommended by the DOE. You now have the responsibility to notify the homeowner. It’s important to show the excitement about what you have found (or didn’t find). Let them know that while there were no signs of insects or rodents, you did notice that the insulation levels were below what the DOE recommends for the area.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) states that as much as 80% of the homes in the U.S. are under-insulated.
This is a great opportunity to mention that you have a product that can help them. Not only will you be able to increase the insulation levels to save them energy, TAP® also acts as an additional protection should insects like ants, cockroaches, silverfish, termites, and more infiltrate the attic in the future. It’s important to stress that EPA-registered TAP® Pest Control Insulation is only sold by licensed Pest Control Companies due to the nature of the pesticide attributes. Insulation contractors do not have access to this type of product.
Follow-Up is Critical to Success
After you have closed the sale and the job is complete, it’s important to follow up with the customer about 30-60 days later to see if they have noticed any improvement in the comfort of their home. This is more for you than it is for the homeowner. Science proves that there will be a difference in the energy savings. The purpose is to see and hear their feedback on how much it has helped them and how they wish they had installed TAP® sooner. Use this positivity as you propose TAP® Pest Control Insulation to all of your customers!
